About Me

Hello and thanks for visiting Johnstone's Vin Blanc! I’m Jessica and I’ve lived in DurhamNC since February 2007 with my incredible husband, Andy, and two adorable beagles, Finley and Wilson. We originally moved here so that Andy could start his 3-yr Neurotoxicologist post doc with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.  Thankfully, in June 2010, he was also offered and accepted a permanent biologist position with the E.P.A. We are thrilled to be staying in Durham, as we’ve both fallen in love with the area!!

Prior to our move, we lived in Richmond, Kentucky for most of our lives. I was born and lived the first 5 years of my life in Hamilton, Ohio and then spent one year in Arlington, VA before my parents moved us to Kentucky where I started 2nd grade.

Andy and I both earned our B.S. degrees (mine in Ele. Ed in 2003, his in Biology in 2002) at EasternKentucky University, which is also where we started dating the summer of 2001. One year later we were married, June 1, 2002, and had moved to LexingtonKY while Andy worked on his Ph.D. in Biology, from the University of Kentucky (Go Wildcats!).

During our first year of marriage I was also in school completing my senior year of undergrad at EKU. Once I had graduated I decided that though I adore children, my heart wasn’t really into teaching and I took a job with a local credit union. I worked there for 3 years as an Executive Assistant and really loved the experience while Andy completed his graduate degree. Once moving to Durham I decided to apply for the same type of position and quickly, one day after applying I was called for an interview, landed a fabulous job at Duke doing similar work in Human Resources.

In December 2006, Andy graduated and a month later had accepted his post doc in Durham, NC. Within 2 months, February 2007, we had sold our home, purchased one in Durham (over our first weekend visit to the city), and had moved 8 hours away from our family and friends for the first time in either of our lives. It was a very hard experience for us both at first and that is one of the main reasons I started this blog in May 2007. I found blogging to be a great way to connect and continue to share my life and the dishes I was preparing with our family and friends. Since then I’ve met and found so many wonderful food bloggers and have discovered how fortunate I am to have moved to such a vibrant, eclectic, foodie town. I like to share my experiences supporting local restaurants, shops, and farmers.
